Why Maritime Academy Established?
Puntland Maritime Academy was established after the government recognized the need for a training institution to answer the following compelling facts in Puntland:-
- Shortage of skilled manpower in the marine and fishing industry in Puntland and generally Somalia.
- 95% percent of Puntland imports and exports are transported over the sea and the fact of that sea is country’s food supply route.
- 99% of business vessels in Puntland are freighted by foreign crew due to shortage of local skilled mariners and engineers, ports and shipping managers, supply chain and logistics professionals in Puntland.
- Untapped marine resource and 60% motorized fishing boats are not working due to lack of skilled mechanics, technicians, spare or replacement parts and other equipment.
- Little scientific evidence available on the status of marine fishery resources due to the lack of data and research capacities.
